저는 노래로 역사를 읽고, 그 노래를 현재로 다시 부르는 일을 해 왔습니다. 노래는 제게 연구의 대상이면서 삶을 이해하는 하나의 방식입니다. 음반과 기사, 공연 자료 등을 토대로 한국 대중음악의 서사를 구성해 왔습니다.
2004년 서울대학교 대학원 국어국문학과에서 「일제강점기 한국 대중가요 연구―유성기 음반 자료를 중심으로」라는 논문으로 박사학위를 받았습니다. 이 연구는 흩어져 있던 노래들을 역사적 맥락 속에서 다시 읽어내는 출발점이 되었습니다.
2006년부터 라디오와 TV 프로그램을 통해 노래를 해설하고 시대를 읽는 작업을 시작했습니다. 연구실에서 축적한 자료와 해석을 바탕으로 방송을 통해 대중과 소통해 왔습니다. 2009년에 수상한 인천문화재단 ‘플랫폼문화비평상’ 음악부문상은 연구자뿐 아니라 비평가로서도 공적 발언을 이어갈 수 있는 전환점이 되었습니다.
2012년 근대 가요 <외로운 가로등>(1939)을 새롭게 불러 가수로 데뷔하였습니다. 아주 오랫동안 품어 온 꿈을 구체적인 작업으로 실현한 순간이었습니다. 이후 《장유정이 부르는 모던 조선: 1930년대 재즈송》, 《경성야행》, 《군말: 노래로 만나는 만해 한용운》 등의 음반과 디지털 싱글을 발표하며 역사적 레퍼토리의 재해석과 창작 작업을 병행하고 있습니다.
2014년 미국 시애틀 워싱턴대학교 방문학자를 지냈으며, 한국대중음악학회 회장, 서울역사박물관 운영위원, 대한민국역사박물관 공연기획위원 등을 역임하였습니다.
노래를 연구하는 일은 결국 사람을 이해하는 일이라고 믿습니다. 좋은 노래를 부르고 싶다는 마음은 좋은 사람이 되고 싶다는 마음과 닿아 있습니다. 노래와 연구는 그렇게 저를 찾아가는 여정이라고 생각합니다. 그리고 저는 여전히 그 길 위에 서 있습니다.

I read history through song and bring those songs back into the present. For me, song is both an object of scholarly inquiry and a way of understanding life. Through phonograph records, newspapers, and performance archives, I construct and interpret the narrative of Korean popular music.
In 2004, I received my Ph.D. in Korean Language and Literature from Seoul National University with a dissertation titled “Research on Korean Popular Songs During the Japanese Colonial Period: Focusing on Phonographic Records.” This study marked the beginning of my effort to rediscover scattered songs and recontextualize them within their historical framework.
Since 2006, I have extended my work beyond academia by interpreting songs and exploring their historical contexts through radio and television programs. Drawing on research cultivated in the archive, I have continued to engage with the public through broadcasting. In 2009, I received the Music Award at the Platform Cultural Criticism Award from the Incheon Cultural Foundation, a recognition that affirmed my role not only as a researcher but also as a public critic.
In 2012, I made my debut as a singer by reinterpreting the modern song “A Lonely Streetlight” (1939). It was the realization of a long-held aspiration. Since then, I have released albums including ZHANG Eujeong Sings Modern Jo-Sun: Korean Jazz Songs in the 1930s, Midnight in Kyungsung, and Gunmal: Meeting Manhae Han Yong-un through Songs, along with several digital singles. Through these works, I pursue both the reinterpretation of historical repertoire and original creative expression.
In 2014, I served as a visiting scholar at the University of Washington in Seattle. I have also held positions such as President of the Korean Association for the Study of Popular Music, member of the Steering Committee of the Seoul Museum of History, and performance planning committee member of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History.
I believe that studying song ultimately means seeking to understand people. The desire to sing good songs is inseparable from the desire to become a good person. For me, both scholarship and singing are part of an ongoing journey toward understanding myself. And I remain on that path.
